2 Over 20, 28 at 12?

21 Feb

In 2009 Dolphin running backs scored two touchdowns over twenty yards. Chris Johnson had three, by the third quarter of week two. Frank Gore had two eighty yard romps that very same day.

There are understandable cries to bring a #1 wide receiver to South Florida this offseason, and this should undoubtedly be a priority. But one could argue (this one sure could anyway), that running back is a serious need as well.

Ricky Williams approached miracle status last year. He was absolutely heroic, both in his rugged play on the field, and his repeated avoidance of mind altering substances. But he has said publicly that his time on the gridiron is nearing an end. He will soon be willfully put out to stud, making many small, enigmatic baby running backs while giving heavenly massages to all comers.

Meanwhile, Ronnie Brown, bless his Auburnian heart, has been oft’ injured in his tenure with our fair squad. He has been wonderful when he can suit up, but his clipboard holding leaves much to be desired. More importantly, Ronnie’s contract will be up after the 2010 season.

Four possibilities: 1) We offer a perpetually gimpy back the world with a fence around it, and he stays. 2) Someone else offers said perpetually gimpy back the world with a fence around it, and he leaves. 3) Aforementioned running back has another injury-plagued season, and re-signs with us at a fair price. 4) The back in question has another injury-plagued season, but still signs somewhere else.

None of these options make me feel too fuzzy and cozy at the position, and if they do you than you must be already prone to feeling fuzzy and cozy, or have somehow recently acquired a Snuggie.

Which leads me to our nifty little spot at #12 in the upcoming draft. There are plenty of mocks that have us taking a defender, most commonly Rolando McClain. MLB and OLB/DE are need areas, sure, but also perhaps the deepest positions in the draft. Tennessee NT Dan Williams is also mentioned, and we do need to shop for a space-eater or two. Still, there are some big boys expected to be available in the mid rounds.

Several mocks have us going with wide receiver Dez Bryant. If he’s there (seems like Denver may scoop him up if Brandon Marshall bids them adieu), and if we haven’t made a significant move to upgrade the position (Anquan Boldin, Antonio Bryant, Paul Warfield Jr.), we have to consider Bryant. Then again, the WRs who may be around for our second pick are pretty nifty too (LaFell, Benn, etc).

As this draft shapes up, I think it’s quite likely that when the clock strikes Dolphin, the absolute best player on the board will be Clemson running back C.J. Spiller.

Spiller is a once in a lifetime talent, who is truly a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball. He’s a fantastic receiver, who could help a passing game the same way Marshall Faulk did with the Rams. Couldn’t our offense use that type of explosion? We were helpless to find big plays last season, and it certainly cost us some games.

I am reminded of the Vikings’ pick of Adrian Peterson. If you remember, Chester Taylor had just had a stellar season up there. But when AP was there on the board, Minnesota realized their good fortune, and pulled the trigger.

If he’s there, I think we may have to bring him into the fold, the humongous fold in which we somehow fit an entire football team. Our running back situation isn’t as settled as it appears, and this would be a very forward-thinking move by The Trifecta. Just my two cents…

Now, off to change some diapers and write some trailer scripts for a humans-being-eaten-alive-by-swarms-of-ferocious-creatures movie.

I think Spiller’s a beast and I love his hands — he’d give us that serious threat in the slot that just doesn’t exist right now — but I don’t see Parcells going for it. I’m hoping we make some offseason moves to shore up the D-line/LB corps and WR so we’ve got the luxury of taking a guy like Spiller who could, indeed, propel us to the next level.

Oh, and I love the SI Duper cover. I think I had that issue…

Karlos Dansby would be a huge free agent addition. Coupled with a trade for Boldin, or an Antonio Bryant signing, and we would hopefully have that “best player available” flexibility if Spiller’s there by our pick. Again, tough to forecast the draft without seeing the free agent drama shake out first. Thanks for the comment, anonymous fan who doesn’t know me.
