Fergie’s Black Eye

7 Mar

The word is that Jason Ferguson has been suspended for eight games for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing drugs policy. Perhaps this is a classic case of a guy crossing the line while trying to speed up the healing process? Either way, it leaves us considerably “effed” at nose tackle. Ferguson was our safety net at the position, an affordable veteran who still plugged the run remarkably well. Now we’re left scrambling.

Paul Soliai, bless his gargantuan heart, is not the answer. He’s a nice guy to be able to throw into the mix, but not the run-stuffer you like to stick in the middle of a 3-4 to stop the O-line’s in its tracks.

So, we’re in a tight spot at nose tackle now too. Former Pro Bowl NT Jamal Williams was just released by the Chargers. He tore his triceps in week 1 last year, and hasn’t played since. He was scheduled to make $5m this year, plus a $1m bonus, so it’s easy to see why he was released. Perhaps he can be the new Fergie Ferg?

Shaun Rogers is apparently being dangled by the Browns, but the Browns’ run defense improved by leaps and bounds after his injury last year. Suspicious. He has talent, but the Brownies are sick of his freelancing. There’s talk that Rogers has developed Sportscenteritis, an uncontrollable urge to try and make the highlight reel while completely blowing your assignment.

The draft? Dan Williams in the first. Terrence Cody in the late first or second. Cam Thomas in the second or third. That’s how most see the top three falling. With Jason in the fold we would have had the luxury of waiting for the right nose to fall to us at the right pick. Without him, we may have to reach, just to make sure we’ve secured a man in the middle.

If we don’t sign or draft a legit replacement then we’re going to miss Fergie, like a child misses their blanket.
