How this Guy Ruined the Perfect Mock

5 Apr

NFLRoughDraft.com just posted their latest mock (a five round one), and all was well with the Dolphins. That is, until Utah guard Zane Beadles crashed the party.

Round 1, we added stud Earl Thomas at free safety. Round 2, we grabbed an excellent WR1 prospect in Arrelious Benn. Then we addressed our NT issue with UCF’s Torrell Troup in round 3. However, this lovely momentum came to a screeching halt in round 4, when Zane dropped in unannounced.

No offense to Mr. Beadles. Seems like a swell guy. But for Joseph Smith’s sake people, BYU’s studly TE Dennis Pitta was still on the board! I think we need to add a couple of legit toys for Henne this offseason, and the fourth will probably be our last chance to land such a polished receiving TE.

So close, but yet so far, NFLroughdraft.com.

It's Zane on the membrane. It's Zane on the brain.

How does Benn fall to Rd. 2? Going back to 2000, only in 2006 and 2008 were there less than 3 WR’s taken in the first round. I haven’t analyzed each team by needs, but I’d figure at least 3 WR’s go in Rd. 1 which means Benn is most likely gone. The scary thing is out of the 43 Rd. 1 WR’s taken over the last 10 years, maybe 5 are good, with only 3 being great (L. Fitz, A. Johnson, R. Wayne). Here’s the breakdown:

    2009 – 6
    2008 – 0
    2007 – 6
    2006 – 1
    2005 – 6
    2004 – 7
    2003 – 3
    2002 – 3
    2001 – 6
    2000 – 5

Profootballtalk’s latest mock has 2 WRs in the 1st. Walter Football’s latest mock has 2 as well. Benn isn’t among them. Golden Tate and Demaryius sneak into the late first. It will be close, but it’s entirely possible. Dez, Demaryius, Tate, Benn? Is LaFell up there too? I wonder where the Trifecta has him on their draft board.

I look at way too many mock drafts, to be sure. But I would bet the average is two WRs in the first round. So we’d just need the top of the 2nd to fall in our favor. 42 picks before our 2nd rounder, and it looks like a large chunk of those will be offensive linemen.

I believe this draft is looking like two WRs in the first, Dez and one of the also-rans. Probably Demaryius, as his “measurables” are freakish. If we don’t grab Dez, count on an agonizing waiting game as we plead with the Football Gods to allow one of the secondary WR targets to fall to 43. I think LaFell will be there. But Demaryius and Benn? That may be a stretch.
