A First Round Pick Swap with Philly? Safety Dance Part Two

18 Apr

Philly has put out word that they’d like to climb up the draft board to nab a top safety. Were we to make a deal with the Iggles, we would almost certainly end up with picks 24 and 37 in return.

Philadelphia would grab Eric Berry or Earl Thomas, depending on who falls to 12. In turn, the good guys would hope that the right players fall to them at 24 and 37.

It seems to The Bottlenose that making this trade or not will depend largely on what The Trifecta thinks of Morgan Burnett, Nate Allen, Major Wright and Reshad Jones. If we’re handing one of those two “can’t miss” (Lie. Anyone can miss.) safeties to another team, we’d better feel good about the guy we’ll get later.

Per Pat Kirwan of NFL.com’s latest 3-round mock, pick 24 would leave us picking from strong DE/OLB prospects Brandon Graham, Sean Weatherspoon, Carlos Dunlap, Everson Griffin, and Jerry Hughes.

At pick 37 safeties Nate Allen and Morgan Burnett are still on the board. Both have been praised by scouts, and both project as at least starting quality free safeties. Interestingly enough, NT Terrence Cody is also available in Kirwan’s mock. Hmmm…

At the top of the 3rd, Pat has us grabbing Senior Bowl darling, NT Cam Thomas. This would be a fine pick if we passed on Cody at 37. Major Wright and Reshad Jones would also be there in the 3rd, if we were smitten with either.

When you consider the difference…

Earl Thomas and Cam Thomas vs Brandon Graham, Morgan Burnett and Cam Thomas.

…then the idea of trading down is intriguing.

But you’d better make sure about the guys you get at 24 and 37. It won’t be surprising to see both Eric Berry and Earl Thomas making a lot of noise for years to come.
