After the recent conclusion of the Jamarcus Russell debacle you’ve gotta say Marino was the biggest steal.Late first round for a HOF franchise QB we see a lot of teams hope they are getting #1 overall.
Zach was obviously a steal as was that other guy that wore #99…but I’m pretty sure he’s dead (to me at least).
Indeed, Marino was a steal! Kills me to say this as a Dolphins fan, but there’s another HOF QB who was a greater steal –6th rounder. For Fins, however, all of the above choices were steals in their own rights, in their own eras. Couldn’t imagine Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid without one another. Clayton was swift. Zach was relentless. All definitely steals who’d helped Miami in their time.
Um, yeah, Marino. How many stiff QB’s were taken before him? Based on his greatness he should have been in the poll. Based on your choices, my vote would be Clayton, considering the modern draft would make him a free agent pick.
We all love Marino, and it’s insane how many QBs were picked ahead of him. But Unitas went in the 9th round. Montana in the 3rd. Brady in the 6th. Tarkenton in the 3rd. Favre in the 2nd. That Marino fell to us where he did was absurd, but he was picked in the 1st round.
At any rate, that’s why I didn’t include him in the steal category. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got to go stare lovingly at my Marino Wheaties box and watch an old VHS tape of his comeback versus New England.
Just for the heck of it, how about Jim “CRASH” Jensen in round 11, pick 291. Always one of my favorites. 12 great productive years. Forgotten by all but diehard fans.
Jensen was clutch. Though he barely eclipsed 2,000 yards receiving in his career, it was the importance of his catches, which so often were made at crucial times.
My favorite stat? 1984. Marino tore up everyone in sight, but it was Crash who completed 100% of his passes, for 35 yards and a TD.

Marino was a steal at anything after pick #1.
Marino was definatly a steal after the # 1 pick and he is arguably the best QB to ever play……..But JT was also a great pick in the 3rd round

Yeah, got to hand it to the Patsies for nabbing Brady that late. Kurt Warner was a pretty good find too.
