Smiley and Torbor Out the Door, Atogwe In?

27 May

The Bottlenose could be mistaken, but we smell a salary purge around Dolphin headquarters.

Reggie Torbor was set to make $3million next season, while Justin Smiley inked a 5 year, $25million deal when he became a sea mammal. Both are history now, and we think it’s even money that Miami’s freeing up some sand dollars for Rams free safety OJ Atogwe.

OJ will get paid. He’s been a little banged up, but is any team’s best chance to add an impact free safety between now and the regular season. Perhaps we’ve seen enough of Reshad Jones to pencil him in as Yeremiah Bell’s backup, but not to throw him into battle cold turkey? Perhaps Clemons isn’t quite there yet, and may never be?

We’re not afraid to admit that we’re guessing here, but the timing seems to match up for the Dolphins to dive into the OJ sweepstakes.

otogwe & Crayton would be great additions

Crayton is intriguing. Marshall, Hartline, Bess, Camarillo, Crayton and… Grice-Mullen? Pat Turner? It would be an interesting battle at the bottom of the WR pile.

Thanks for stopping by The Bottlenose, Jobu.

Great article. It makes perfect sense.

BTW we did throw that kind of money at Rolle and we did miss out Clark. Very intriguing. Thanks.

Thanks. Yeah, it is interesting that we went after both Rolle and Clark, unsuccessfully. Clearly, at least back then, we weren’t wild about our options at FS.

We’ll get a closer look at Reshad Jones this weekend. But we’ve freed up enough ducats to be in the OJ bidding if we don’t feel any better about the position in the next few days.

And I was starting to feel comfortable letting the folks we have battle it out…whatever just get somebody back there and let’s win some games. Is it Sept yet?!

    Go FINS!!

It is intriguing and I really hope the Phins pull the trigger with him. Giving Jones and Clemons more time to learn and mature could provide great depth in the years to come at a position that is now thin. This Dolphins team is one of the deepest talent wise we’ve had in a long while which will be very important as injuries pile up during the season.

I agree about the depth. I’m really appreciating what the Trifecta has accomplished. If this draft class is the real deal, we’re going to be tough as nails. The average age of our projected starters is 25. That’s good news for our future.

eh…i’m not so sure about Crayton because..is he not getting on in years? Also, I don’t like the idea of it because I really see RGM stepping into the return man role and Turner FINALLY making it onto the field this season. Too much WR depth as it is IMO. Now, getting Atogwe would mean spending big bucks as well as placing him on an already crowded roster. Who will we let go?? I guess I would have to go with Culver =/
