First of all, thanks to Phinfever.com for a pretty interesting compilation of 44 mock first round Dolphin picks from around the worldwide interwebnet. What was so interesting? Well, an amazing 29 out of 44 mocks have Alabama running back Mark Ingram wearing aqua and coral next season.
Really no telling how this is all going to play out, but one thing seems to be consistent in the mocks that send Ingram to South Beach. A few quarterbacks are usually gone, while the top running back is still on the board. This seems to match the needs of the teams above us. A healthy pile of teams picking before slot 15 are QB hungry, while the demand for running backs up top doesn’t seem nearly as high. Thus (yeah, we used “thus” in a sports blog. Jealous?), as far as skill positions go, a running back may be both the need and “best player available” pick.
So, with both Ronnie and Ricky over 97 in running back years, and also completely free to sign elsewhere, we can see how Ingram makes some serious sense. Of course, mocks normally don’t account for things like trading down. Miami could end up valuing a couple of other backs equally to (or even above) Ingram. In that case it could make sense to trade down, adding the 2nd rounder we spent on Brandon Marshall, and grab a studly young RB later in the 1st. Or we may have added Deangelo Williams by draft weekend. Who knows?
But, to honor Mark Ingram’s crown as the King of Early Miami Mocks, we present this nifty highlight reel. The action is fantastic, but we also dig the Heisman acceptance speech. Seems like a good kid. Does a very rare thing for a college athlete, and actually thanks his educators. He also thanks the teammates, coaches and staff (in great detail) who put him there. He seems most moved about bringing his school its first Heisman. Perhaps we’ll see similar tears when he brings the Dolphins their first Lombardi in 38 years? Unlikely? Maybe. But hey, hope springs eternal in the offseason.
