Porpoises Pay Paul!

24 Feb

The Dolphins have placed the Franchise Tag on mammoth nose tackle Paul Soliai, guaranteeing The Mad Islander $12.5million this season.

The cost of the tag was raised substantially by Albert Haynesworth’s megadeal. Soliai’s number was determined by an average of the top five defensive linemen, and Fat Albert’s $25million (24.8) 2010 salary impacted that hugely. No doubt a thank you note to Haynesworth is in order, from Paul and agent David Canter.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins greatly improve their chances of fielding an elite defense this season. Soliai was the anchor of a line that was stellar against the run, on the #6 overall defense in the NFL. The Dolphins D also played without first rounder Jared Odrick, who is expected to be at full strength in 2011. If another team were to still sign Soliai away, we would receive two first rounders as compensation.

Great news, and hopefully the SoFlo Sea Mammals and Soliai can still hammer out something long term.
