If You Could Change Just One Dolphins Draft Pick…

18 Mar

Okay we admit it, it’s a slow time for football news. The players and owners are posturing. The SoFlo Sea Mammals are working out every player and their mothers. The draft can’t get here soon enough.

Perfect opportunity for some “what ifs”. So let’s jump in The Bottlenose Regret Machine, shall we? We want to know, if you could change one draft pick in Dolphins history, what would it be?

Lots of great choices, but we’re going to change one from that amazing 1983 draft. We’ve already had Marino fall to us in the late first. Now we’re going to take it down to the end of the 7th round. Miami’s pick? Keith Woetzel, linebacker, Rutgers.

We’d nix that. Instead we’d go with a defensive end from Tennessee State who went eight picks later. Yep, in our reboot, we not only grab Dan Marino and Mark Clayton that year, but at pick #203 we also bring Hall of Fame monster Richard Dent into the fold.

Why Dent, aside from the fact that he was an absolute beast? There is a tiny hole in the heart of most Dolfans I know. What’s missing? I think it’s the memory of Dan Marino holding up the Lombardi. Richard Dent and Dan Marino in their primes, on the same team? Now that could have been Super.

So bring it. You can change one pick. We’d love to know yours.

  1. Wow so many to change March 18, 2011 at 11:44 pm #

But I would have to switch out… Ted Ginn for ANYONE else in that entire Draft. I’ll never forget how mad I was, and how happy the Jets fans were. Terrible moment in Miami Dolphins history.

    Brees over Jamar Fletcher

Eddie Moore would be out and Anquan Boldin would be in. I remember Kiuper saying he had Moore pegged in the 6th round. Moore had 2 indescript years in the NFL – starting 3 games and Anquan has 650 catches and 51 TD’s…

Eddie Moore’s pick single-handedly set this franchise into a tailspin. His biggest claim to fame was “getting knocked out by some dude from Sunrise, FL at a bar” – not exactly what you want from an NFL Linebacker and the first pick of your draft…

Getting rid of mid round picks for an eventual hall of fame pick is easy – but to pinpoint what caused the 1-15 season and avoid it now that is an art…

    Ronnie Brown Out
    Aaron Rodgers IN

Also pass on Manny Wright in the 5th round of the supplimental draft and grab Miles Austin. Who went undrafted the next April.

For me one of the more recent blunders still burns hottest:

Ted Ginn out… Patrick Willis come on down!!!

1988 instead of Eric Kumerow we get Thurman Thomas. Not only does that put a HOF RB in the backfield with Marino which is head and shoulders above anyone else he ever had. It also strips the Bills of a great player that seemed to always be the obstacle we could never overcome.

    GO FINS!!

Good one. I’ve always lamented this one too. Thurman kicked our behinds about 548 times.

It would have to be Before 2000 becuase more then anything I’d want to have seen Dan Marino get a ring.

1997 Yatil Green . OMG what a wasted oppourtunity to get Dan to the promised land. I would have loved Miami to have moved up 2 picks and grabbed Tony Gonzalez. man can you imagine that tandem?

I’d take WR Moss instead of Avery RB

If I could change one Dolphins draft pick in history, it would be the 1983 first round pick of Dan Marino, because the Steelers would have picked him at #21 instead of letting him (along with every other team) slide to Miami at #27.

      • Dan Ewen March 21, 2011 at 7:52 am #

Mark Malone was a beast for you guys. Same with “Neckbeard” O’Donnell. Don’t hypothetically take Marino away from us.
