Silver Lining to Lockout for the Dolphins?

15 Jun

DISCLAIMER: The following is a desperate attempt to find something positive about the unending hell of the lockout.

Okay, let’s suppose that a deal is made in July, and the regular season schedule is left unscathed. Camp and the preseason would certainly be a bit of a rush job. Who would that favor? In our opinion, defenses.

You know those sloppy preseason games with cruddy chemistry in the passing game, an endless stream of three-and-outs, and a 10-6 final score? If there’s a shorter preseason, expect offenses to be sluggish early on. Teams have already missed countless practices. So much of the passing game involves precise timing, and we’re not sure player workouts will keep everyone sharp in lieu of official camps.

Quarterbacks often need an entire preseason to work out the kinks. Last preseason Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and Michael Vick all had passer ratings in the mid 60s or worse. They would all three be at 91.0 or above in the regular season.

Miami’s defense was sixth overall in 2010. We return everyone of note, and add Odrick and Edds. Not to mention Jeff Ireland says “some pieces” may still be added on that side of the ball.  Mike Nolan returns. The players know his system, and ran it well last year.

Sure, there are things on defense that need to be worked on in minicamp and the preseason. But the bottom line, Cam Wake barreling toward a signal caller is a much simpler act than a perfectly timed fade pattern between a QB and a wideout.

If there’s a rush to be ready for the regular season, we say advantage defense.

I agree. Our defense should be even better this year, so we might have an advantage early on in the year which could really build confidence and momentum.

We face Brady, Schaub and Rivers in the first month. It would be nice if they weren’t fully in “The Zone” yet!

Thanks for the comment, and GO DOLPHINS!
